Im a GREAT naturopath…….and a terrible runner.

I have a great ‘knack’ for helping people feel well, and have an uncanny ‘knack’ for tripping over my own feet.

There, I said it, and, boy, does it feel strange…..especially the first bit.

When did we become so incapable of pointing out our strengths?

Whilst finding it so easy to highlight our weaknesses?

About 10 years ago, a flatmates girlfriend was showing me a new skirt she had bought……she squealed ‘I look SO cute in this skirt!’…..I spun around to see if she was joking.

She was not.

I immediately thought ‘You cant say that about yourself!’.

Well, why not?

She DID look amazing in the skirt!

This example stayed with me a long time, and has resurfaced since beginning my parenting journey.

My four year old daughter is constantly dressing up and telling me how amazing she looks, she is constantly running fast and telling me what a good runner she is (lucky her!), she is constantly drawing and pointing out how good an artist she is.

Would I think for a second ‘You cant say that about yourself!’?

NO WAY!

So why do we do it to ourselves as adults?

What I know that ourself beliefs (or lack of them) influence every decision (or indecision) in our lives.

The way we think about ourselves can propel us forward, keep us stagnant, or bounce us backwards……..this is true in the arena of health, but also in every other area of our lives.

What would happen if you were to walk into your bosses office and tell him that you have just outdone yourself on your latest project?

So lets start with the little things – when someone pays you a compliment, don’t say ‘oh no, its not that great’ or ‘god, no, this skirt is so old’…….say ‘thanks!’ or if you are really daring you can say ‘Thanks, I think I look cute in this skirt!’.

Trust me the world wont stop turning:)

Whats some of the things you are GREAT at?

Are you a great mum?

When you kids are sick/hurt, your hugs make them feel better?

Are you a fantastic artist?

Are you great with money?

list of personal goals: smile, love and be awesomeAre you a great runner?

Do you write amazing stories?

Do you cooking amazing meals?

I would LOVE to hear what you are great at……try it, it actually feels great to acknowledge it:)

Love this! I am a great listener. Plus I am a great sister!

I remember that story about the cute skirt girl, its always stayed with me too.
When I am being an asshole to myself I ask “If you spoke to your friends like that how would they react?” and the answer usually lets me adjust my internal dialogue accordingly. Being kind to ourselves is sometimes very difficult.

So true……we are so much harder on ourselves than we would be to others, great tip to ask yourself that question Prue!
