In full disclosure – I am shit scared of exercise. Moving my body was something that induced heart palpitations heavy breathing and the feeling that I wanted to run away (ironic as that was what I was freaking out about).
I was the kid that was told that I was ‘smart, not sporty’ (funny how these things stick?!).
I was the one that was picked for the ‘D’ netball team, and always picked last for a team, athletics days was an absolute nightmare….my heart still pounds when I think about running down the track dead last. By a mile. Every time.
(These days, I’m the mum furiously screaming encouragement for the kid running last at my kid’s athletics carnival).
The way I got my head around ‘exercise’ was to reframe it as ‘movement’.
As being curious about my body moving.
What this looks like.
What is feels like.
What is happening when I move (I tapped into my fascination with the human body and how it works).
I found a way that works for me.
I decided to move my body every day in a kind, loving way.
Social media worthy? Not really.
Effective. Hell yes.
If you have an exercise mentality nailed, that’s fantastic, but I ask you…. are you exercising from a place of self-love or self-loathing?
A place of nurturing?
Or a place of pushing?
I’ll just leave that there for you to answer.
So what do I do to move my body each week?
- Yoga classes (this is a mixture of yin/restorative, vinyasa and power – and yes, I have resistance to that word!)
- Walking – on the beach when I have a chance, or in my lunch break – 15 minutes in one direction and 15 minutes back, or incidental exercise (do you need to derive to the shops? Park? Beach? Pub?).
- Playing with my kids – hand ball and god forbid, the latest craze is ‘just dance’ on you tube…. they are horrified (as they should be), but I join in anyway.
BTW, with all this hippy self-love (ha-ha), there still has to be some solid actions – every Sunday I add what I am doing to my diary.
It’s a game changer.
Do you already have a solid exercise habit?
Do you need to get started?
So how are you going to add movement to your week?
